Harold Mahony's gold medal from Wimbledon 1896. Medal represents the apex of Mahony's legendary tennis career, triumphing over Wilfred Baddeley for the gold. Mahony was also an Olympic silver medalist and part of the first winning team for the British Isles at the Davis Cup 1903 before his untimely death in a bicycle accident at age 38. Gold medal features a pair of crossed rackets to obverse, with a tudor rose positioned underneath, surrounded by, ''All England Club / Wimbledon''. To reverse engraved at center is, ''1896 / Mr. H.S Mahony'', flanked by laurel sprigs and surrounded by the title, ''Lawn Tennis Champion''. 18k gold medal bears the maker's name of Henry Soane, London. Measures 1.5'' in diameter. Weighs just over 1 ounce or 31 grams. Faint scratching, else near fine.
