This picture was made by the French photographer Willy Ronis in 1934. The vintage gelatin silver print is inscribed on the reverse side with ‘L'arrivée d'une colonne des chômeurs à Lille’ and depicts a street protest of unemployed workers in the mining town of Lille in Northern France, who are holding up a poster with the inscription ‘Marche des chômeurs sur Lille’. Ronis belonged to the French School of Photographic Humanism and was best-known for his post-war works in Paris and the French province.

On the reverse side the work has been marked with the copyright wet stamp of the artist, the publisher’s stamp of Société du Petit Parisien and the handwritten title. The photograph shows some retouched spots in the center. The sheet is slightly corrugated with some distinct deterioration marks especially on the lower margin. It is mounted with tape on the upper margin (reversible) under passe-partout. The sheet size is 16.5 x 22.7 5 cm and the total dimensions are 40 x 30 cm.

Willy Ronis (1910-2009)

Born in France, Willy Ronis was an award-winning photographer, whose photographic works were devoted to the postwar period. His photographs depict life on the streets in Paris and the Provence. Along with Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau, Ronis is among the representatives of the French School of the Photographic Humanism. The city of Paris honored him with an exhibition at the town hall and also the Art Museum Picasso in Münster dedicated a retrospective to the artist in 2013 consisting of 80 works.
