The present gelatin silver print reveals an artist’s portrait taken by Willy Maywald. It is an expressive depiction of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) on the beach near Vallouris. Picasso was passionate about being photographed and used the medium of photography to evoke a distinct image that defined him as an artist. Maywald’s works may therefore be regarded in relation to Picasso-portraits taken by famous photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson or Man Ray.
The gelatin silver print reveals an embossed stamp lower right ‘ASSOCIATION Willy Maywald’. It is verso also stamped ‘ASSOCIATION WILLY MAYWALD LOI 1901 © ADAGP – PARIS’ and ‘© WILLY MAYWALD-ADAGP MENTION OBLIGATOIRE’. The work is verso matted along one edge. The image size is 56.8 x 56.8 cm and the sheet measures 60.2 x 60.2 cm. The overall framed dimensions are 76 x 79 cm.
Willy Maywald (1907-1985)
Willy Maywald was born in Kleve in 1907 and moved to Paris around 1933, in order to establish as a freelance photographer. After the Second World War, Maywald received his first jobs as a fashion photographer and was soon discovered by famous designers, such as Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain and Jaques Fath. Maywald was also a close friend of a number of well-known artists, including Picasso, Le Corbusier and Henri Matisse, whom he portrayed in exclusive photographic documentations. His fashion and artist pictures have been exhibited in numerous single and group exhibitions and are regarded as highly sought after collectible items in the international art market. (cbo)
