The German-born photographer Willy Maywald (1907-1985) had his debut in France, where he portrayed various significant personalities of the time. This photograph portrays the French artist Françoise Gilot (b. 1921) in 1948, shortly after Gilot had moved together with Pablo Picasso to the South French village of Vallauris. This is also where she gave birth to both their children. The artist is sitting relaxed on a trunk and is looking, still at the beginning of her career, into the far.



The photograph is inscribed verso in pencil ‘Picasso – Françoise Gilot – 1948 Vallauris’ and marked with the copyright stamp as well as the stamp of the association Willy Maywald. The die stamp of the association W. Maywald is in the lower right. The photograph is mounted with adhesive stripes on top under a mat (reversible). The photograph is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear. The frame shows clear traces of wear. The image size is 48.6 x 46.1 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 59.8 x 49.6 cm. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 67.5 x 64 cm.



Willy Maywald (1907-1985)

Willy Maywald was born in Kleve in 1907 and moved to Paris around 1933, in order to establish as a freelance photographer. After the Second World War, Maywald received his first jobs as a fashion photographer and was soon discovered by famous designers, such as Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain and Jaques Fath. Maywald was also a close friend of a number of well-known artists, including Picasso, Le Corbusier and Henri Matisse, whom he portrayed in exclusive photographic documentations. His fashion and artist pictures have been exhibited in numerous single and group exhibitions and are regarded as highly sought after collectible items in the international art market. (tm)
