Sand-Cast Aluminum. During the 18th-century, a time of tremendous scientific interest, Virginia colonists were fascinated with all kinds of tools and machines. The once-utilitarian armillary, a device designed to teach spherical astronomy, became more decorative by the end of the century. This pineapple armillary is inspired by the decoration on an urn in the Colonial Williamsburg Governor's Palace gardens. Crafted of sand-cast aluminum, it looks handsome in the garden, sunroom, or foyer.
