1863 - This is a stock certificate for Williams & Kellinger Mining Company near Copper City in Pitsburg Mining District. The certificate is for 5 shares at $50 per, is issued to J.W. Hunt and is signed by L.A. Kelley, secretary and T.G. Elliot, president. The cert is in very nice condition, considering its age. Copper City was a three-time mining boom town located in a rich gold, silver and copper mining area. At one time, it was one of the most active and largest mining communities in Shasta County. It bloomed and faded first with gold mining, later with silver mining, and lastly with copper mining. It was first known as the Pittsburgh Mining District, later as Brownsville, even later as Williams, and lastly as Copper City. Its name was derived from the "Original Williams and Kellinger Gold, Silver and Copper Mining Company." Gold was discovered in the area in 1853 and mined successfully. Copper was found in Shasta County in 1857, first noted publicly in 1859, and mined the first time in 1862 at Copper City (then known as Williams), but abandoned because of meager profits. A second mining boom erupted between 1861 and 1963 when new ore discoveries were made. In 1862, Captain O. R. Johnson claimed ownership of the land that became Copper City and promptly built a fence around it.
