Detroit-born William Wiegand won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award for this hard-hitting novel about a "model" penitentiary where "humane" treatment consists of endless brutality and violence. The front endpaper is inscribed in full <I>"For Jan Copeland-with best wishes for a fine student. William Wiegand / December, 1959"</B></I>.
