American General (1914-2005) who commanded American military operations in the Vietnam War at its peak from 1964 to 1968. TLS signed “W. C. Westmoreland,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 8, 1993. Letter to Richard Liblong, in full: “Thank you for your letter. I shall try to address some of your questions as briefly as possible. In Korea our move to the Yo–lu brought China to the battlefield. President Johnson did not want China to repeat that performance. I would not now do anything differently in Vietnam. The goal of the communist was to take over all of Southeast Asia. The strategic prize was the resource–rich ASEAN Countries. We saved them. There was no official plan to use nuclear weapons. I never discussed that matter with the President. I suggest that you read my book, A Soldier Reports.” Westmoreland adds a few handwritten emendations. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
