William Washington Battle of Cowpens Medal MS62 Uncertified. Restrike ca. 1860-1879. Copper. Betts-594, Baker-D287B. 46 millimeters. 56 grams. An eminently collectible example, both sides are richly toned in reddish-brown shades. The detail is expectantly sharp, and the grade is attributed to scattered obverse ticks, an obverse spot at the U in EQUIT, and a couple of contact marks on the reverse. The obverse inscription is translated as: "The America Congress to William Washington, Commander of a Regiment of Cavalry." That on the reverse translates to: "Because with a small band of soldiers he energetically pursued the enemy, and gave a distinguished example of native valor in the battle at Cowpens, January 17, 1781." William Washington was a distant relative of George Washington whose cavalry played a decisive part in the American victory at Cowpens against Banestre Tarleton's vaunted British Legion.Ex: Mail Bid Auction (Early American, 8/1998), lot 713.From The Dennis Ridings Collection.
