William Wardlaw Laing was based in Liverpool during most of his career with an address at 8 & 9 The Temple, Dale Street. Laing variously exhibited throughout his career between 1882-1922 showing at RSA, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, The RA (between 1873-98) and The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour among others.
The present work makes reference to Robert Schumann's musical piece of the same name, often referred to as "Dreaming". The composer himself can be seen in the portrait within the painting; based on a daguerreotype from 1850.
