Distinguished British composer (1902–1983) best known for such works as Façade, a theatrical collaboration with Edith Sitwell, and the oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast. ALS signed twice, three pages on two onionskin sheets, 5.25 x 8.5, La Mortella letterhead, June 29, 1971. The first page, addressed to Geoffrey Elborn, refuses a request to write something; the second page, however, appears to be the piece of writing which Elborn requested. Headed “For the 75th birthday of Sacheverell Sitwell,” it reads, in part: “I first met him at Oxford in 1920 and to his encouragement and enthusiasm I owe a great deal in those young days of my career. His contribution to English Literature is of considerable significance and is still not fully recognized. He is to me the true lyric poet, sensitive, deeply musical, quite uncompromising toward fashion or facile success. I am convinced that the time will come when he will take his place among our major poets.” In fine condition, with scattered creasing, a small central tear to first page, and some show-through from writing to reverse. Sacheverell Sitwell was an English writer and art and music critic, and the youngest brother of Edith Sitwell.
