American-born statesman and financier (1848–1919) of the prominent family of New York millionaires. ALS signed “W. W. Astor,” one page, 7 x 9, August 24, 1883. Letter to James G. Blaine, then speaker of the house, who had served as James A. Garfield’s secretary of state. In part: “I have recently been advised of the receipt at the United States Legation at Rome, Italy, of a copy of your Eulogy upon the late President Garfield, for which I beg you to receive my most cordial thanks.” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds.
