Ink signatures of William Thornton, Alexander White, and Gustavus Scott on an off-white 5 x 1.75 slip clipped from a document, undated but circa late 1790s. In very good condition, with a thin repaired tear to the left side (passing from the top edge through letters in the Scott and Thornton signatures), dampstaining to the center, and scattered soiling. These three served together as the commissioners of the Federal District, as appointed by President George Washington, from 1795 to 1800. They were responsible for supervising the raising of funds, planning, design, and acquisition of property and the erection of public buildings in the city of Washington and the federal district. In this capacity, Thornton designed and oversaw the construction of the US Capitol.
