William Howard Taft typed letter signed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on official Supreme Court stationery, dated 9 February 1924. Here, Taft suggests that his friend, the publisher and philanthropist Edward Bok, consider serving as President of the Board for the Tuskegee Institute. In large part, ''Major Moton of Tuskegee came to me and asked my suggestion of a gentleman as President of their Board to succeed Mr. Willcox of New York. I suggested you. I know you are a busy man, but I know that you have not any matter in hand that is more important to the country at large than the maintenance of that great institution which Tuskegee has grown to be. Major Moton in his way is as essential to the uplift of the negro as Booker Washington was, and I am sure that were you to visit Hampton and Tuskegee on the occasion of their Commencements or other festivals, you would feel the inspiration of the movement which they represent. I hope you can think favorably of Major Moton's proposal...'' signed ''Wm. H Taft''. Letter, with bold, black signature, measures 8'' x 10.5''. Near fine.
