ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” four pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, May 12, 1885. Letter to Mary Audenreid, the widow of Sherman’s aide-de-camp Joseph C. Audenreid, in part: “You & I & all of us feared some worse fate from her willful and strong temper and I have a kind of belief that this whim of returning to the convent may prove a blessing in disguise. The Catholic institutions are as a rule better disciplined than the usual rowdy schools…entertain your friends and be entertained by them…Millions of good women envy you the condition of your independence.” In fine condition.
