ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” four pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, September 6, 1882. Letter to Mrs. Audenried, widow of his former aide-de-camp, Col. Joseph C. Audenried. In part: “I was of course glad to get your good letter of Sept 3 and…when from it I learned of the great danger you had been in and were safe out of – You seem destined to be tried. You did not give me the name of that Suitor who wanted you to share his ten thousand a year at Kansas City…on Tuesday next by the 2 PM train she & I, Genl & Mrs. Tidball will start for Boston. Stay there the 13th then go to Lake Winnipesaukee for a soldiers meeting of 14 & 15, then to the White Mountains for a day or teo. Across to Plattsburg…trusting to our meeting the 12th Infantry…It is perfectly natural that you should yearn for your home and rest. Already a good many paper has come back to Washington ad the weather is about as pleasant as any I know of. In October I go again to Leavenworth. How would you like me to take you out in case Mrs. Sherman will not spare Rachel…Write me quick.” In fine condition.
