General William T. Sherman's original orders to the 5th Division of the Army of the Tennessee. Dated 22 July 1862, orders closely follow the Union victory at the Battle of Memphis, and oversee the eviction of ''...any Lady, woman, or family...'' from an unnamed fort, with provisions for their relocation after displacement. Assigned the duties of enforcing eviction are the 70th Ohio under Colonel Loudon, the 77th Ohio under Major Searing and the 54th Ohio under Major Fisher. Orders on Congressional embossed stationery are handwritten and signed by Adjunct Gen. J.H. Hammond, General Sherman's assistant, who also signs for Sherman. Two-page document on a single sheet measures 7.75'' x 10''. Creasing, minor separation to fold edges and a tiny chip to lower left corner, else near fine.
