William T. Sherman Rare ALS Letter Signed
Impressive handwritten letter signed "W.T. Sherman," three pages on two adjoining 5.5 x 9.25 lightly lined sheets, May 22, 1889. Letter to William H. Riding at the North American Review. In part, "I feel every disposition to say or do anything to manifest respect and affection for Mr. Allan Thorndike, who died so suddenly and unexpectedly. But I do not feel equal to the task of preparing anything worthy of publication. My first acquaintance with him was about four years ago…this acquaintance has expanded into strong feelings of love and mutual respect. He was so handsome. So gracious and intelligent that from the beginning, he grew in my estimation; and I was among the first to hail his entry upon diplomatic life when he was appointed to the First Class Mission to Russia…he was only thirty-nine…yet by his intellectual efforts he gained a reputation and standing among his countrymen which is usually reached only after a long life devoted to public affairs. Please consider me a mourner at his untimely death, rather than a Eulogist of his brilliant and manly qualities.” Exceptionally well preserved and in excellent condition. Est. 700 - 800
