ALS signed “W. T. Sherman, General,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, February 19, 1877. Letter to General Manning Ferguson Force, in part: "Your letter of Feb. 16 is received and I return the Preambles and resolutions in case of Russell…Walker…I find a special interest in the publication, sanctioned at our last meeting of the Proceedings of our Society–June 1865, to 1876 and hope you are making fair progress. We are now in the very crisis of the Presidential election, and I shall in the earnest wish for the success of our comrade and fellow statesman Genl. Hayes." In fine condition.

Manning Ferguson Force was a lawyer, judge, and soldier from Ohio (1824–1899) who became known as the commander of the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was promoted to major general of volunteers in March 1865 and, following the Battle of Atlanta, he participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. Force was a recipient of the Army Medal of Honor for gallantry in action.
