William Strang R A. "The Bath", Mother putting her baby into a bath, signed lower right, on canvas, 120cm x 104cm, 47 1/4 inches x 41 inches. See Illustration £4000-6000
This painting by William Strang RA (1859-1921) was included in the William Strang exhibition of 1981 which was organised by the National Portrait Gallery. The painting was also exhibited at:- 1905 International Society, Summer Exhibition, London, 1905 International Society, Autumn Exhibition, Manchester, 1909, Leicester Galleries, Paintings of W Strang. It was noted the paintings allegory of maternal love illustrates Strang's ability to combine and digest various influences into an image of his own. Whilst the subject belonged to the peasant theme of Millet and Legros and the allegorical concept derived from Watts, the sensuality and tenderness of the image, especially in the mother figure, recalls the nudes of Renoir. The synthetic nature of the work, and rich chiaroscuro and bold technique are typical characteristics of his painting of this date. The Bath has great emotional power.
