Jewett N.Y. 1849</B></I><BR> <BR>William Smith Jewett was born in South Dover, New Jersey. He moved to New York City as a young man and studied at the National Academy of Design. In 1845 he was elected an associate member. In 1849, at the height of the gold rush, he sailed from New York to San Francisco where he resided for years, enjoyed a painting career, and also prospected for gold.
