William Seward Writes About Expanding Telegraph Service to the Pacific Autograph Letter Signed, as senator, 1 page, 8" by 10", Washington, December 9, 1857. To Ezra Cornell, a founder of the Western Union Telegraph Company, for whom Cornell University is named. Traces of mounting at corners, else fine. With typed transcription. Seward wanted to expand the railroads and the telegraph all the way to the Pacific, in large part because he wanted to expand his influence from the East coast all across the country to the West: that's what it took to be President. Assumedly he was happy, then, to tell a powerful New Yorker he was listening to him carefully. In full: "I have received and I will bestow due consideration on your suggestions concerning the proposed extension of Telegraph Communications to the Pacific." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
