Cabinetmaker William Savery Autograph Document Signed. Signed: "William Savery, partial page, 7.25" x 3.25", np, July 8, 1775. There are two separate transactions listed on this one document; the first is a bill for a child's coffin which reads: "7 Mo. 8th 1775 Samuel Wallace to Wm Savery formaking a mahogany coffin with Silvered handles for his daughter 3 foot 2 bottom - 2 - 10 - 0." Below is the receipt: "Rec'd. July 15, 1775. of Saml. Wallis the above Contents in full -William Savery". William Savery was one of the major Philadelphia cabinetmakers of the Colonial period, which means that he was one of the greatest American practitioners of that art. Savery's importance was not recognized until relatively modern times, and little information exists about his life; some of what there is indicates that he was a Quaker, and here he gives the date as "Seventh Month", in the Quaker fashion. This poignant item documents an example of a category of Savery's cabinetmaking artistry that can never be known. In fine condition; clipped; usual folds are present; ink notations on left edge; moderate edge wear.
