William Saroyan, The Human Comedy
William Saroyan, The Human Comedy (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1943), first edition, 291 pages, illustrated, red-cloth binding with black lettering and illustrations, 8vo (8.75” x 6”). Born in Fresno, California, to an Armenian immigrant couple, William Saroyan (1908-1981) wrote popular stories that provided optimism and hope during the Great Depression. The Human Comedy, published in 1943, is set in a fictional California town where a young telegraph messenger experiences the home-front realities of World War II. Saroyan originally was hired by MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer to write the drama in screenplay form, but his uncompromising attitude got him fired, and he reworked his material into a novel instead. The book, with illustrations by Don Freeman, is in very good condition with minor wear and some acidification in the endpapers.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
