William Sadler II (c.1782-1839)
A DISTANT VIEW OF POWERSCOURT WATERFALL, COUNTY WICKLOW, WITH A HORSEMAN
STANDING BY SOME RAPIDS ON THE DARGLE, AND A CARRIAGE ON THE OPPOSITE BANK
oil on panel
28 by 43cm., 11 by 17in.
Painted circa 1830, according to an engraved plaque attached to the original
frame. A similar but smaller view of the same scene, taken from a position
further to the right of the banks of the Dargle, was offered at the Christie’s
Irish Sale, 17 May 2001, lot 83 (catalogued as by Sadler II but with the dates
erroneously given as those of his father). William Sadler’s small views of
Dublin and surrounding areas were generally packed with incidental detail,
"lively and amusing" in the words of Crookshank and the Knight of Glin, if
perhaps sometimes topographically inaccurate.
€3,000-€5,000 (£2,000-£3,400 sterling approx.)
