Union general (1819–1898) who was aide-de-camp to Gen. George B. McClellan, victorious at Corinth and Murfreesboro, but defeated at Chickamauga in September of 1863 and relieved of his command. ALS signed “W. S. Rosecrans,” one page, 4.5 x 7, October 11, 1891. Letter to to Secretary of the Interior John Willock Noble. In full: “My old friend W. P. Walsh, born and raised in Cincinnati, O, now, and for years past, a resident of Hot Springs Arkansas and Mayor of the place at one time, called to see me. He is of honest stock and bears an unchallenged name for integrity and honor. You can trust him.” Intersecting folds, some light brushes to the ink, and a pencil notation to the top, otherwise fine condition.
