ALS in pencil, signed “WR,” one page on the reverse of a 3.5 x 5.5 postcard depicting two women from Tangiers smoking a hookah, no date. Unusual letter describing his foreign travels. In full: “No Mohammedans do not drink but every people have some way of making damn fools of themselves. When a Mohammedan thinks he is getting too sensible he smokes hasheesh. That deprives him of his brains as effectively as alcohol would. Mohammedans spend most of their time praying. A guy wakes ’em up at three o’clock in the morning and they get up and go to the mosque and pray and then go home to bed again. They like praying. Five times a day they pray—and then they are no better than the rest of us.” In fine condition. Hearst was a strict teetotaler and held conservative social values, despite his own affair with actress Marion Davies.
