"Not wholly in the busy world, nor quite
Beyond it, blooms the garden that I love".
Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
These lines from Tennyson were frequently quoted around the period in which Percy French painted the present work. Two years previously, Alfred Austin (1835-1913) had borrowed the phrase as the title of his highly popular diary miscellany - a work which led to him being named Tennyson's successor as Poet Laureate of England in January 1896.
