English-born Quaker (1644–1718) and founder of the colony that became the State of Pennsylvania. Sought-after endorsement signed “Wm. Penn,” on the reverse of a vellum manuscript document, one page, 22 x 14.75, January 23, 1710. Penn signs as one of three witnesses on an English indenture in the name of Queen Anne, recognizing the sale of “Land situate lying and being within…City of New York, Staten Island and Long Island in America…Dame Frances Bathurst by virtue of the last will of…Benjamin Bathurst.” In very good condition, with a partial separation to the upper fold. Early documents related to New York City are desirable in general, and Penn’s extremely scarce signature heightens its already great appeal.
