Important British geologist and early archaeologist (1812–1894). ALS signed “Wm. Pengelly,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, August 14, 1869. Letter to his friend Frederick Howlett, Jr., an astronomer. In part: “There is to be an excursion to Torquay…Arrival at Torquay, the excursionists will disintegrate and move in different directions…Mr. Vivan, my colleague, will take one fragment to Kents Cavern; I shall have the pleasure of taking another to points of geological interest along the west…Each fragment, if so disposed, will visit the Cavern during the day, and there be handed over to Mr. Vivan’s leadership.” Creases below the signature and show-through from writing to opposing sides, otherwise fine condition. Kents Cavern is one of the most important Paleolithic cave systems in Britain.
