Unitarian preacher and author (1816–1885) who spent the end of the 1850s in Rome, where he grew increasingly interested in and attracted to spiritualism and the supernatural. LS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 9, June 2. Unusual letter to a gentleman regarding encounters with the supernatural. In full: "Last evening I had another spirit-interview with M. F. and now she allows me to mention her name: the purpose of concealment being answered. She says that she did not know you; but that she knew spirits by whom somebody was to be influenced to visit me; a person who knew of her, without having known her. That she expected that I should talk to you of my interview with her; and that you would recognize her, in the manner of her conversation. I said what kind of a person would you suppose him to be—I meaning theologically. She answered that you must be a man of good lodgment—with form, weight, colour well developed. But the organs, phrenologically so named, how they could help him in such a matter, I asked. She said by enabling him to judge of structure, emphasis and richness in style. She said that judging from your friends in the other world, she should suppose you were certainly progressive in character—and were perhaps a Swedenborgian, or a Unitarian, or a Universalist, and that you might be orthodox, but not very probably so. This interview was perhaps more satisfactory than the previous one—I mean for the rare eloquence with which Margaret expressed herself." In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered staining and soiling, show-through from writing on reverse of first page, and mounting remnants to reverse of second integral page.
