English writer and critic (1829–1919). ALS signed “W. M. Rossetti,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, April 28. Letter to Thomas Gibbons, in part: “Whitman wrote to me last on 30 Jan. at some considerable length. The letter contains no reference to you, or to any letter of mine relating to you. I conclude therefore, with some confidence that up to that date he had not received any communication of yours for the details into which he enters would naturally have led to his mentioning that also had it occurred. I dare say I may be hearing from him again within a month or two.” A pair of articles is affixed to the front of the second integral page. Show-through from writing to opposing sides and two blocks of toning to signed page, otherwise fine condition. A well-known member of the celebrated Rossetti family—brother to both Dante Gabriel and Christina—William Michael Rossetti introduced Whitman’s poetry to Europe’s literary elite with his 1868 selection Poems by Walt Whitman. Though it contained only fragments of Leaves of Grass and was later called by Whitman ‘the horrible dismemberment’ of his book, this first British edition was well received and made a significant impact on his career.
