Partly-printed DS as president, signed “William McKinley,” one page, 17.5 x 12.5, July 12, 1897. President McKinley appoints Arthur S. Hardy of New Hampshire. In part: “I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint you to be Minister Resident and Counsul General of the United States of America to Persia, authorizing you hereby to do and perform all such matters and things as to the said place or office doth appertain.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds with a vertical fold through the middle of his first name, wrinkling, mild toning to the extreme edges, and several small holes at the borders. The white seal is intact with a horizontal fold across the top. Hardy served as minister to Persia until 1899. In addition to being a diplomat, Hardy was a well-regarded engineer, educator, editor, novelist, and poet who also served as chair of mathematics at Dartmouth.
