Vintage sepia matte-finish 8.5 x 6.5 photo of President McKinley and Vice President Hobart seated in a horse-drawn carriage on Lake Champlain, signed in black ink, "With much regard, your friends, William McKinley" and "Garret A. Hobart." Includes a TLS from Acting Secretary to the President George B. Cortelyou, August 23, 1899, Executive Mansion letterhead, addressed to Colonel LeGrand B. Cannon, in part: "At the request of the President and Vice–President I have much pleasure in sending you the enclosed photograph with a personal inscription." In very good to fine condition, with a thin stain across the image (with a small area of emulsion loss at its right end), and some areas of light discoloration. After nearly a full summer spent resting on the Jersey Shore, the ailing Hobart and his wife joined the president and first lady at their cottage on the shores of Lake Champlain in August 1899. In spite of such prolonged respite, Hobart succumbed from heart disease on November 21, 1899, just three months after the photograph was taken.
