<B>William McKinley: One of the Most Colorful Large Button Varieties Made for this Candidate.</B></I> This 2 1/8" 1900 issue celebrates American prosperity as well as our victory in the Spanish-American war. While it does not depict McKinley, it is nonetheless considered a campaign item. It reads in part "the people will not vote themselves into the poorhouse twice in eight years". This refers of course to Grover Cleveland's election in 1892 which was followed by an economic panic in 1893. The nation's economy had shown a surge of growth following McKinley's first election in 1896.
