Interesting AMS with ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, June 26, no year. Headed “The Pen to the Album by W. M. Thackeray,” the author pens a playful sixty-six line poem, beginning: “I am Miss Catherine’s book (the Album speaks); I’ve lain among your tomes these many weeks; I’m tired of these old coats and yellow cheeks. Quick, Pen! and write a line with a good grace; Come! draw me off a funny little face; And, prithee, send me back to Chesam Place.” At the end he pens a letter, again signed “W. M. Thackeray,” in part: “A thousand pardons for not writing sooner…I had nothing fit for you but these lines wh. I have this minute done (and with an amount of trouble you’d scarce credit, for my muse is the slowest of performers).” Affixed within an attractive custom-made leatherbound book with slipcase. In fine condition.
