ALS signed “W. M. Thackeray,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 8.75, June 1, 1859. Handwritten letter to Mrs. Yorke (wife of Grantham Yorke, rector of St. Philips, Birmingham), requesting her help in obtaining a curacy for a deserving young man. In part: "In the matter of the curacy I pen the following lines, and address them to you because of the softness of your sex, and in order to try and interest you…for a gentleman who is in want of just such a care as Mr. Yorke seems to have vacant." Thackeray goes on to say that the gentleman, Mr. Thomas, has been involved for many years in a romance and would very much like to marry, and that a curacy with Mr. Yorke would fiscally allow him to do so. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, overall creasing, light soiling, and a couple of small pieces of old tape on the second page.
