Letter of recommendation to the "Collector, port of New York," in part: "We the undersigned, would respectfully recommend for the place of Inspector of the Customs at this port Newell J. McClure, of this city. Mr. McClure commenced his active life many years ago at Concord, N.H., in the printing office of the late Isaac Hill, and contributed at various times to the columns of the N.H. Patriot. For the last eight years he has been a resident of this city; was for a couple of years one of the proprietors of the True Sun newspaper, and was employed on that paper during the campaign of 1848. The grandson of a revolutionary officer, the son of a democratic parent, he has on every occasion worked for and voted for the regular democratic ticket." Signed at the conclusion by Tweed.
