Journalist, editor, and social reformer (1805–1879) best known as one of the most ardent and influential abolitionists in the decades leading up to the Civil War. ALS signed “Wm. Lloyd Garrison,” one page, 7.75 x 4.5, December 13, 1856. Garrison responds to an autograph request. In full: “My autograph is at your service, though I can hardly be classed among ‘distinguished’ men, except, perhaps, on the score of notoriety. Excuse me for not having sent you an earlier answer. Yours, for universal freedom.” In very good condition, with two vertical folds, one passing through the signature, a tiny hole beneath one word, and edge and corner soiling from past mounting.
