Journalist, editor, and social reformer (1805–1879) best known as one of the most ardent and influential abolitionists in the decades leading up to the Civil War. ALS signed “Wm. Lloyd Garrison,” three pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, September 1, 1878. Letter to Miss Whitney regarding his bust sculpture. In part: “Calling at your residence yesterday, I was glad to be informed…that you were getting needed recreation among the New Hampshire mountains…My object in calling was to ascertain whether you would have any objection to the placing of my bust in the Charitable Mechanics Exhibition; and if not, then I will send the tinted one in my possession, which is next in delicacy to the marble copy now in process of completion at Florence.…As the number of visitors to the Exhibition will be counted by tens of thousands, it will be a rare opportunity for your friends and mine, and for the public at large, to see this most satisfactory specimen of your artistic skills.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature.
