William Lee Golden was born on January 12, 1939 in Brewton, Alabama. He joined the Oak Ridge Boys in 1965 and left in 1987. He played solo thereafter. He returned in 1995 and still plays with the band.

The Oak Ridge Boys were active from 1943 to the present. The quartet has had 32 musicians over the years. The lineup that produced their most well-known country and crossover hits ― such as "Elvira" (1981), "Bobbie Sue" (1982), and "American Made" (1983) ― consisted of Allen, Golden, Sterban, and tenor vocalist Joe Bonsall. The group has released 31 studio albums and 63 singles, including 17 which reached No. 1.
