Brigadier General (1827-1911) in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War and later served as Mayor of Dallas, Texas. War-dated ADS, entirely in Cabell’s hand and signed “Witness, W. L. Cabell,” one page, 7 x 9, December 6, 1862, Fort Smith Ark. (near the Indian Territory). A slave bill of sale in which Elias Rector (brother of Arkansas Governor Henry Rector)“in consideration of eight hundred dollars…sld and delivered to Catherine Cabell…a Negro girl named Mary eight years old, a slave for life, sound in body and mind.” Signed at the conclusion by Cabell, and also signed by Rector. In very good condition, with light toning primarily along intersecting folds, trimmed top edge, scattered creasing, and some smudges and mild ink erosion to several words of text.
The topic here being the reason behind the Civil War, this document was, sadly, commonplace at the time, and the sale of this young girl, for a tidy sum of money, to Cabell’s wife was completely acceptable in certain circles. However, the document is made perhaps more heart-wrenching in view of Cabell’s design of the Confederate Battle Flag…the South’s most prominent symbol. Several weeks earlier, Cabell was shot in the foot during a battle—and two days later had his horse fall on him, paralyzing his left leg and forcing him to relinquish his command. Less than a month later, on January 1, 1863, under orders from Abraham Lincoln, all slaves were to be freed in those areas still in rebellion against the federal government—an order that would be meaningless to poor 8-year-old Mary for three more years. An extremely rare item, Civil War autograph expert Brian Green notes this is the only war-date slave bill of sale signed by a Confederate general he has encountered in 35 years.
