Canadian RCA [1927-1977] DEFORMED DESTITUTES OF INDIA (FROM PACEM IN TERRIS); 1969 ink heightened with white on paper 19.5 x 25.5 in. (49.5 x 64.8 cm) monogrammed Provenance: The Issacs Gallery, Toronto Note: This series of drawings was used to illustrate the poem of the same title written by Kurelek's missionary friend, Father MurrayAbraham, who operated a school near Darjeeling, India. The film "Pacem in Terris" was produced in 1971. In his typed notes, verso, Kurelek writes "This is a composite of the various unfortunates I saw on my tour of Indian cities. This is to gowith the verse 'every human being has the right to human integrity' and 'every human being has the right to clothing'...". He goes on to describe the living conditions and sights he saw in detail.
