American physician (1837–1932) who performed the first removal of a brain tumor in the United States and pioneered the adoption of Lister’s antiseptic surgical practices. He assisted Dr. Joseph Bryant in the now-famous secret operation to remove a cancerous tumor from the jaw of President Grover Cleveland aboard a yacht on July 1, 1893. TLS signed “W. W. Keen,” one page, 8.5 x 10.5, personal letterhead, November 4, 1898. Letter to his daughter Margaret at Vassar College. In part: “We had a great scrimmage last night over the list, trying to get it ready for you. The number of people that we killed off was extraordinary, but I suppose that we shall have to add more than subtract. The Duncans wrote me if I would come and act as a pall-bearer, but I did not feel well enough to go.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a uniform shade of mild toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
