American politician (1860–1925), three-time presidential candidate, secretary of state under Woodrow Wilson, and one of the attorneys in the 1925 Scopes Trial. ALS signed “W. J. Bryan,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, April 29, 1898. Bryan responds to an earlier letter. In full: “On my return to the city I found your favor of the 18 of March. The canes have not arrived and I only write to enable you to trace the matter up. Riciprocating [sic] your expressions of good will.” Scattering toning, soiling along top edge, intersecting folds, and brushes to a few words. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, otherwise fine condition.
