William James Autograph Letter Declining an Article - on Herbert Spencer Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page, 5.5" by 8.5", Chororua, New Hampshire, September 4, 1902. To Hamilton Holt. A nascent tear at a fold, and a couple pencil notations at borders, otherwise quite good. William James has been variously described as the greatest of American psychologists, the most famous American philosopher since Emerson, and a completely original thinker in and between the disciplines of physiology, psychology and philosophy. His first great work was on Herbert Spencer, in 1878, but now - his twelve-hundred page masterwork, The Principles of Psychology behind him and his classic The Varieties of Religious Experience just out - he declines to go back to where he started. "I much regret my inability to write the article you so kindly propose, on Mr. Spencer's chapter, and remain truly yours..." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
