William IV gold Half-Sovereign, 1834. S-3830. Small Flan variety, which exists only for the 1831 Proofs and this date, the first year this denomination was struck as a currency coin during this short reign. King William was Victoria's uncle; he spent most of his adult life in the Royal Navy, for which he became known as the Sailor King. His gold coins are elusive in high grade, which is not well emphasized by the fairly modest valuations given in the Spink guide book. These coins have in fact always been a challenge to locate in true Mint State, and here is one of the very finest seen by the present cataloguer in some 30 years of buying, selling and writing about English gold coins. It represents a collecting opportunity. MS64 PCGS: Superb Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, slightly prooflike with gleaming luster, and struck up in all details except for the tiniest high points of the reverse shield. The surfaces are almost flawless. Far rarer in this grade than most realize. Few exist so splendid. Very few!

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
