<Our item number 119894><B>William III.</B> &#40;1650-1702&#41; Prince of Orange who became co-ruler of England with his wife Mary II; they were invited to rule England after the forced abdication of James II &#40;Mary&#39;s father&#41;. After Mary&#39;s death in 1694, William ruled alone. The reign of William and Mary marked the end of royal prerogative, as set forth by the Bill of Rights in 1789; the Act of Settlement in 1701 forbade the King to wage war without Parliament&#39;s consent and granted Parliament the right to establish the successtion to the throne &#40;in order to eliminate the potential for Catholic influence in the government&#41;.<BR><BR> DS &#40;&#34;William R.&#34;&#41; as King, 1p, 12¼&#34; 7¾&#34;, Kensington, 1695 May 8. The document makes reference to a commission dated March 18, 1694 that appointed &#34;<I>our Right Trusty & Right Entirely Beloved Cousin Meinhard Duke of Schonburg our Generall of Our Horse & other the Cheif officers of Our Army, to meet and assemble twice every week or oftner…for the examining and redressing of abuses in our Army</I>….&#34; That commisision stated that any three officers, in addition to Schonburg, would form a quorum.
