<B>William Henry Vanderbilt Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>Wm H Vanderbilt.</B></I> Two pages, 8" x 10", On New York and Harlem Railroad stationary, New York, May 29, 1866. Vanderbilt advises council to offer settlement in pending litigation against the railroad. "<I>it seems to me from somewhat careful examination of evidence in this case... You know I hate litigation, but you also know I will resist extortion. If the parties are willing to split the difference, I will pay it...</B></I>" The Vanderbilts in the 1860s bought up many of the smaller railroads in the greater Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio region. Consolidating them and reorganizing labor supply brought the languishing independents into a unified dominant force in the transportation industry. <I>From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.</B></I>
