For anyone interested in Salt Lake's early scenery, this is a wonderful shot. * William Henry Jackson (1843 - 1942) was an American explorer, painter, Civil War soldier, and geological survey photographer who became famous for his depictions of the American West. Jackson won a commission from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869 to document * scenery along their routes to promote their rail service. He was invited to exhibit photographs and clay models of Anasazi dwellings at Mesa Verde for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. He settled in in Denver, Colorado where he set up a studio, * and produced many national and international views. *
